South Moreland Avenue update

With master planning process in the starting stages, improvements are already seen on south Moreland Avenue.

In February of this year, SouthStar Community Development Corporation kicked off a special project: the South Moreland Ave Corridor Coalition (SMACC), a Coalition dedicated to improving the livability of Moreland Avenue. This coalition includes the state and local elected representatives for the areas around Moreland Avenue, local community leaders, SouthStar CDC board members, local pedestrian advocates and others.

As a first action step, members of SMACC agreed to work with the state’s Department of Transportation to immediately improve pedestrian conditions along Moreland and Glenwood Avenues. These are both state routes which the state recently repaved. As part of the repaving, several pedestrian crosswalks were removed, and SMACC has been working to get these crossings replaced.

In addition, the Coalition has been working with the state’s DOT to improve the pedestrian crossings on the Moreland Avenue bridge over I-20. This will include removing juniper bushes to allow approaching cars to better see pedestrians, as well as extending sidewalks to reduce the distance a pedestrian has to walk to cross the street.

Additional planned improvements include the installation of a traffic light at the westbound exit from I-20 to Moreland Avenue southbound. These pedestrian improvements on the bridge are already underway and the traffic light should be installed within the next 4 months.

This is the first step to a broader vision of improving the livability of Moreland Avenue, south of Memorial Drive. The next step in this vision is a Livable Centers Initiative that was recently funded by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) for Moreland Avenue from Memorial Drive south to I-285. This is a grant that the SouthStar CDC submitted to ARC on behalf of the City of Atlanta.

In the near future, professional planners coordinating the project will begin the process of gathering community input. Community participation in this process will be essential to accomplishing a vision for a "complete" livable street. Keep in touch with this process at http://southstarcdc.org.
