ARC's Initiative Funds South Moreland Avenue Study

SouthStar CDC and City of Atlanta collaborate to study revitalizing southeast Atlanta corridor.

The Atlanta Regional Commission announced a $95,000 grant to study how to make southeast Atlanta a more livable community by improving south Moreland Avenue. The South Moreland Avenue Corridor study will formulate strategies to develop activity nodes along the corridor that will create urban scale, mixed-use developments that are pedestrian-friendly and support various transportation choices.

Since its founding in 1998, SouthStar CDC has worked to revitalize the portion of Moreland Avenue south of Memorial Drive in Atlanta. "We recognize the regional importance of Moreland Avenue," said SouthStar CDC board chair Kevin Lynch. "The LCI study will help us plan for the future of the corridor to serve the region and be a livable and sustainable part of the fabric of southeast Atlanta." The grant is from ARC’s award-winning Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), a program created in 1999 to help local jurisdictions better link transportation improvements with land use development strategies to create sustainable, livable communities that help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality. LCI has assisted 79 communities in better connecting homes, shops and offices, enhancing streetscapes, emphasizing pedestrians, improving access to transit options and expanding housing options.
