SouthStar CDC Commended by Dept. Public Works

East Atlanta Village Streetscape Phase I recognized along with other Atlanta improvements

The following commendation was delivered to SouthStar CDC for its leadership role in the first Phase of East Atlanta Village Streetscape improvements, financed by the City of Atlanta's Qulaity of Life Bond Issue. -- On behalf of the City of Atlanta's Department of Public Works, I would like to convey our appreciation for your strong participation in, and support for, the outstanding success of the implementation of community improvement projects funded by the 1st issue of the City's $150M Quality of Life Bond Program. We extend our deepest gratitude to you for your unselfish and generous cooperation with the task of completing these projects by June 2006. Now that the final numbers are in, I am pleased to inform you that as a result of our combined efforts, several City of Atlanta neighborhoods are enjoying 223 new sidewalk projects, 18 greenspace enhancement projects, 359 street resurfacing/bridge related projects, and 224 traffic improvement projects; all within the 1st Bond issue budget of $63M and within the time restraints of the program! The Department of Public Works officially began overseeing the program in the Fall of 2003. Since this inception, we have consistently met and exceeded project implementation goals. For this first spend down of funds to be completed in such as organized and consistent manner, we were particularly pleased to be able to draw on such commitment from the various governmental entities, utility companies, contractors, consultants, and the communities we ultimately serve. It is my belief the "partnerships" and "alliances" we have formed and come to rely on during the past three years comprises the essence of what it will take to forge ahead with the remainder of the work to be done to complete the Quality of Life Bond Program. I encourage each of you to continue in your fervent support for the City of Atlanta and improving our quality of life for today and tomorrow. Sincerely yours, David E. Scott, P.E. Commissioner Department of Public Works
